AFC North: Steelers get Moore than expected

Football Betting Lines

10/07/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pittsburgh Steelers running back Mewelde Moore knew before the regular season started that he had two players to leapfrog before getting his shot at carrying the ball. Little did he know that opportunity would come Sunday night in Jacksonville.

With starter and Pro Bowl running back Willie Parker sidelined with a knee injury and rookie backup Rashard Mendenhall out for the year because of a shoulder problem, Moore earned his first start since 2005 with Minnesota against a defensive-minded Jaguars squad in its own backyard. Many critics believed Pittsburgh's running back-by-committee approach would flop under the Florida stars, but Moore displayed moves from his standout days at Tulane by rushing for 99 yards on 17 carries in a 26-21 Steelers' victory.

Moore drew comparisons to Parker with his quick and elusive style of running while being reliable out of the backfield with three receptions for 17 yards. The veteran, who signed with the Steelers as a free agent in March, perhaps may have recorded the 100th yard on the night had his helmet strap not snapped during Pittsburgh's game-winning drive.

"It would have been like icing on the cake," Moore said of reaching the century mark. "A win and 99 yards, the win is my extra yard. I am satisfied with the win. I am satisfied with what we accomplished as a team."

Now Moore and the AFC North-leading Steelers (4-1) can relax with their bye week coming up, and a few of players -- particularly Parker -- will be able to return to the field on October 19 at division-rival Cincinnati. Parker hasn't played since a Week 3 loss at Philadelphia and should be ready to go against a Bengals team he has tortured in the past. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in three of the last four meetings between the teams, with five touchdowns over that span.

Nose tackle Casey Hampton, defensive end Brett Keisel, cornerback Deshea Townsend and guard Kendall Simmons are also currently banged up for the Steelers.

Another member of the walking wounded who is in strong need of a break is quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben has been sacked 18 times so far this season and three times in each of the previous two games.

With the Steelers wary of how Moore would perform on the big stage, the offense initially rested its hopes on the sore shoulder of Roethlisberger, who passed for 309 yards, three touchdowns and was picked off once against the Jags. He hadn't thrown for more than 191 yards in each of the Steelers' previous four games before shredding the Jags' secondary, which allowed a game-winning eight-yard touchdown strike from Roethlisberger to Hines Ward with 1:53 left to play.

The Steelers are 4-1 for the second consecutive year.

BENGALS: If history has any bearing on an NFL coach's tenure, especially in Cincinnati, than Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis can expect a pink slip some time during or after this season. The Bengals are off to a miserable 0-5 start for the first time since opening the 2002 campaign with seven straight losses. Dick LeBeau led the team to a 2-14 record that year and was replaced by Lewis the following season.

Lewis went 8-8 in his first two seasons, 11-5 in 2005, then back to 8-8 in 2006 and a 7-9 mark last year. Now he is feeling the heat more than ever with Cincinnati struggling through the worst of times under his tenure.

Sunday's 31-22 loss at Dallas was closer than it the score indicated, however. After the Cowboys cruised to a comfortable 17-0 lead early on, Cincinnati never gave up even though the breaks were going Dallas' way and quarterback Carson Palmer shook off an elbow injury to throw for 217 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. It almost seemed as if the Bengals were going to find the win column against a tough Cowboys team on the road, but a costly fumble by running back Chris Perry extinguished any fire the Bengals had left. The miscue resulted in a 57-yard touchdown from Tony Romo to Terrell Owens that gave the Cowboys a 24-16 lead.

Perry now has five fumbles in five games and may see his carries cut in half with the team reportedly set to re-sign recently-released running back Kenny Watson. Watson was released on Saturday in a move that created a roster spot for wide receiver Chris Henry. In other news concerning the team's backfield, new Bengals running back Cedric Benson made his debut on Sunday and ran for 30 yards on 10 carries. As Benson digests more of the offense, his playing should increase throughout the weeks.

Benson, the fourth pick in the 2005 draft by Chicago, was released by the Bears in June and signed by the Bengals last week. He saw action in a game for the first time since November on Sunday. The former University of Texas star is expected to see more time this week for Cincinnati, which will play its second straight road game and third away test in four weeks this Sunday at the New York Jets.

RAVENS: Baltimore Ravens young head coach John Harbaugh has his team off to a 2-2 start after Sunday's tough loss versus the undefeated Tennessee Titans. Harbaugh and the Ravens started out 2-0 before losing the last two games by a combined six points, as Baltimore dropped a 23-20 overtime decision at Pittsburgh before the Titans departed M&T Bank Stadium with a 13-10 triumph on Sunday.

The Tennessee game was a slugfest that came down to the final two minutes, as Titans quarterback Kerry Collins took advantage of a defensive penalty on the Ravens by marching his team downfield and firing the game-winning pass to Alge Crumpler. Even though the Ravens outgained the Titans by a 285-210 margin in total yards, it wasn't enough to keep pace with the 4-1 Pittsburgh Steelers atop the AFC North.

The Ravens have been plagued by the injury bug as well. Cornerback Samari Rolle (neck surgery) and safety Dawan Landry (neck) were inactive on Sunday, while corner Fabian Washington (shoulder) and offensive lineman Adam Terry (knee) were hurt during the contest. Rolle is expected to be out at least a month.

Veteran wide receiver Derrick Mason (thumb) also went down this Sunday versus the Titans. He leads the Ravens with 21 catches for 261 yards this season.

Baltimore's defense played extremely tough until the fourth quarter, as it held Tennessee running backs LenDale White and rookie Chris Johnson to a combined 48 yards on 21 carries. The unit committed a costly blunder late in the final period, however, when linebacker Terrell Suggs was whistled for touching Collins' helmet on a third-down try to give the Titans a fresh set of downs on the game-winning touchdown drive.

It didn't help either that kicker Matt Stover missed a field goal before halftime and first-year signal caller Joe Flacco was intercepted twice.

Now the Ravens take their show to the road for back-to-back games at Indianapolis and Miami. Baltimore has lost eight of its last nine road games dating back to last season, and will have tough time this week at the Colts with a banged-up defensive backfield.

In other news, Ravens running back Le'Ron McClain is tied for third in the NFL with four rushing touchdowns. He has done well splitting time with starter Willis McGahee, who is shaking off a chest injury.

BROWNS: Cleveland entered its recent bye week with its first win of the season, a 20-12 victory over the AFC North-rival Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4, and now the well-rested club will prepare for back-to-back games versus NFC East inhabitants New York and Washington. The Browns will host the defending Super Bowl champion and 4-0 Giants on Monday night, Cleveland's first appearance on Monday Night Football since December 8, 2003.

Head coach Romeo Crennel will have a few banged-up players back, but the biggest return may be wide receiver Donte Stallworth. The veteran has yet to play this season because of a pulled quadriceps muscle, but is expected to make his debut against a New York team he is familiar with, having played with Philadelphia a few years ago. Stallworth is a speedy wideout who keeps safeties off of the line of scrimmage, and his return should open the offense for Pro Bowl receiver Braylon Edwards. Edwards hasn't lived up to expectations this season, but is still a threat downfield and a favorite target of quarterback Derek Anderson.

Anderson would like to redeem himself after suffering a concussion against the Giants in the preseason and prove to the Cleveland fans that backup Brady Quinn should remain holding the clipboard.

In other injury news for the upcoming game against the G-Men, veteran linebacker Willie McGinest may return after missing two games with a hamstring injury. Offensive tackle Ryan Tucker, who has been sidelined since having surgery for a fractured hip in May, is expected to be ready for this week. Tucker was the Browns' starting right tackle from 2002-2006 and started the last eight games of the 2007 season.

MySportsbook.com : Fortune Favors Favorites in March Madness betting?

Just like Day 1 of the “Sweet 16”, Friday’s games are chock full of some of the nation’s elite.  Unlike Thursday’s games, there is a little bit more of a “Cinderella” feel as #7 seed UNLV and #6 seed Vanderbilt will attempt to move on to the Elite Eight.  With powerhouses Florida, UNC and Georgetown looking to continue their momentum against lesser known teams, it isn’t surprising that once again the “betting public” is backing most of the favorites.  As the early coin rolls in, 56% of Sportsbook.com bettors prefer Georgetown (-7.5) as they take on Vanderbilt; 84% of the early money is backing Oregon (-3) as they square off against UNLV; and a slight majority (52%) of the early cash is on Florida (-10.5) against Butler as the Gators continue their quest for another National Title. The only favorite the public don’t seem confident in is UNC, as 59% of the cash is backing the underdog Trojans (+8).

Midwest

#1 Florida vs. #5 Butler

The defending National Champs have been on a mission since last April.  Joakim Noah and Al Horford turned down millions of dollars for one reason, to REPEAT.  After a late season hiccup which saw them lose three out of four, the Gators have won six straight by an average of 20.3 points. More importantly, they covered in five of those six games.  Behind their stymie defense that yields only 56.9 PPG, Butler has been a very pleasant surprise this season.  As their 20-11 ATS record will indicate, “surprise teams” like Butler are often good bets for gamblers.  Playing in an average conference, Butler wasn’t and underdog too often but when they were, they covered (6-0 ATS).  Butler’s defense will have its hands full against a Gators offense which averages 80.1 PPG on an amazing 52.9% shooting from the field.  With Florida’s tournament experience over the last few years, it isn’t surprising that they are 5-1 ATS this season, 20-4 ATS over the last three seasons and 38-20 since 1997 in tournament action.

#3 Oregon vs. #7 UNLV

As a #7 seed, UNLV is the closest thing to a “Cinderella” we have this year.  If you bet on UNLV this season with any regularity, you most likely cashed in. Behind their guard oriented attack, the Rebels are an impressive 20-11 ATS this season.  As an underdog they covered in 8 out of their ten games which isn’t surprising since they are 52-30 ATS as a ‘dog since 1997. The Rebels have been a consistent cover during the month of March as well.  This March they are 6-0 ATS, 11-3 ATS over the last three seasons and 24-11 since 1997. Their impressive ATS trends don’t end there; versus teams with a winning record they are 15-6 ATS this season and 41-21 over the last three seasons.  Although Oregon hasn’t been as generous to gamblers as UNLV this season, they have been covering consistently as of late.  There is no question that they are playing their best ball of the season having won their last 8 straight up (SU) by an average of 14.5 points. Not surprising they covered in 7 of those games.  It is interesting to note how similar these teams are in regards to scoring and scoring defense. UNLV averages 75 PPG while giving up 66.5 PPG and Oregon scores 75.8 PPG while yielding 65.5 PPG.

East

#6 Vanderbilt vs. #2 Georgetown

“Hoya Paranoia” is officially back! After a decent start, Georgetown has rolled through the second half of the season.  Over their last 18 games, they are 17-1 SU.  They have definitely improved ATS as the season has progressed as well. After opening the season 1-4-1 ATS, the Hoyas have covered 78.3% of their games.  With their great interior play of Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert, the Hoyas as a team shoot 50.5% from the field.  Like the Georgetown teams from years ago, they also excel on defense.  Hoya opponents averaged only 56.8 PPG on 38.2% shooting from the field and an extremely low 30.4% from beyond the arc.  The last stat could be of some concern to Vanderbilt considering they shoot 37.7% from long-range.  Ranking second to last in the SEC in rebounding margin, Vanderbilt will have its work cut out for them against the Hoya trees. As far as covering is concerned, Vanderbilt has been almost a “sure thing” (7-1 ATS) versus good defensive teams that allow less than 64 PPG.

#1 UNC vs. # 5 USC

The Tar Heels are as talented and as deep as any team in the country.  Going ten deep and chock full of HS All-Americans, UNC averages 86.1 PPG and scored 100+ seven times.  Led by All-American forward, Tyler Hansbrough (18.6 PPG 7.9 RPG) UNC has a very balanced attack which can kill you on the inside as well as on the perimeter.  UNC only real concern is their youth as eight of their rotation players are either sophomores or freshmen.  UNC was a reliable cover this season going 20-13 ATS.  An intriguing covering trend for the Tar Heels in recent years has been how they fared after non-conference games.  This season they are 11-3 ATS after non-conference games and over the last three seasons they are 31-13 ATS.  USC is also a pretty deep team which is loaded with swingman types.  An match-up to keep an eye on will be freshman forward Taj Gibson (12.1 PPG, 8.6 RPG) as he squares off against the AA Hansbrough.  USC has been a covering machine this season achieving a 21-10 record ATS.  They have thrived in the underdog role, having covered 10 out of 12.  When playing a team with a winning record, the Trojans are an incredible 20-6 ATS. Keep in mind, USC dedicated their season to former star to Ryan Francis who passed away before the season so as they get closer to the ultimate goal, emotion could definitely be on their side.

FOOTBALL TRASH TALK

NFL Football Trash Talk

Trash talk has a place in every competitive endeavor (except baseball; those stirrup-wearers are too busy chewing on their sunflower seeds and their “supplements” to worry about what their opponents are doing).

Fantasy sports is no exception. Any intelligent discussion of the subject would probably start with a thesis statement or a definition of terms. Thankfully, this won’t be an intelligent discussion.

Let me just say that I am happy to take a place in this space alongside my talented colleagues, even our commissioner. (You should see how she bleats like a demented paper boy about league fees on our fantasy site).

Trash talking, I would argue, is primarily about amusing your friends, their sheeplike demeanors and sloping foreheads notwithstanding. The best place I have found for football trash talking is at www.SportsAlarm.com.

Beyond the entertainment factor, though, I would recognize that the sophomoric ritual has one advantage, when properly applied. It magnifies your fantasy triumphs and mitigates your fantasy failures by transforming the eventual point total into an afterthought. Winning makes it seem like your opponent really is a “truss-owning, lapel-pin-wearing nitwit.” And in defeat, trash talk can be the air bag to break the fall from your hyperbolic heights. “The plug-necked yahoos on your team,” you can say, “will be sacking groceries by the end of the season.”

The best trash talk, in my view, is layered and nuanced. And it doesn’t focus only on your opponent’s team. It picks apart your opponent. The idea is to create a shock-and-awe-scale blizzard of nonsense, and the goal is to make your opponent drop his hands from his keyboard in exasperation.

What team does your opponent root for? Accuse a Giants fan of having a Joe Namath pillowcase. Where’s your opponent from? Give a look of concern no matter his reply, then say, “I’ll try to type slower for you next time.” Is your opponent into politics? Label everyone a tax-and-spend corporate shill.

Cap all that with a liberal application of irrelevance. For instance, don’t just conclude by saying your opponent is a “twerp who drafts like my grandmother.” Say that your opponent is a “sweater-wearing, eyebrow-plucking twerp who drafts his team about as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor gave acceptance speeches at the Oscars.” By the time your foe makes sense of that, his starting running back will have had puppies.

But what about you? Hmm? Recall a memorable slam? Have a tried-and-true technique? Know someone who seems impervious to insult? Take a moment and tells us about it. Put together some (fit-for-publication) thoughts. You won’t be too busy returning phone messages from your friends, I’m sure, to reply.

In addition to the trash talking, the Sports Alarm has a huge gallery of high resolution pictures of beautiful women and models in bikinis. The most popular models are: Lindsay Lohan, Carrie Underwood, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paris Hilton.
