Chelsea's Drogba charged with violent conduct

11/14/2008 - London, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was charged with violent conduct Friday by the Football Association for throwing an object at Burnley fans during a mid-week Carling Cup match.

Drogba could yet face police action after appearing to throw a coin back into the visiting fans at Stamford Bridge, having been the target of missiles after opening the scoring for the Blues.

"Didier Drogba has been charged with violent conduct," an FA statement read. "Drogba is alleged to have thrown a missile into the away section of the crowd after scoring during the League Cup match at Stamford Bridge.

"He has until 6 p.m. on Monday 17 November to respond to the charge and a regulatory commission will hear the case on Tuesday 18 November.

"Referee Keith Stroud confirmed to the FA that he had booked Drogba for going towards the opposition supporters to celebrate, but that he had not seen the missile incident.

"The FA has written to both Chelsea and Burnley to request information on missiles thrown at Chelsea players from the Burnley section. The FA is also liaising with Metropolitan Police regarding these incidents."

Earlier former Blues great and current West Ham manager, Gianfranco Zola, had voiced his support for Drogba, saying: "I know Drogba is a very composed and honest player. He is always fair.

"If he reacted, maybe he has been insulted and that is not good in football. The crowd has to respect the players and the other way round."

Drogba himself had apologized straight after the clash with the Clarets, admitting: "This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me.

"The big mistake I did was to throw it back, so if someone was hurt I just want to apologize for it.

"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologize. It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it.

"It was just a mistake and nothing more."
