11/20/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New Jersey Devils will try to post back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly a month when they welcome the Florida Panthers for tonight's meeting at the Prudential Center.
The Devils ended a four-game losing streak their last time out, as they won the back end of a home-and-home series with Washington this past Saturday in Newark.
Tonight, New Jersey will aim for consecutive victories, something the club hasn't done since posting a three-game winning streak from October 16-22.
Zach Parise scored the winning goal in the shootout on Saturday to lift New Jersey to the 6-5 win over the Capitals. The Devils nearly saw their losing streak extended in that game as Alexander Ovechkin scored with one second left in regulation to send the test to overtime.
New Jersey goaltender Scott Clemmensen made a glove save on Viktor Kozlov to begin the shootout. Parise then beat Jose Theodore on a backhand-forehand deke. After a scoreless second round, Clemmensen poke-checked an unsuspecting Boyd Gordon to preserve the win.
Patrik Elias registered two goals and an assist for the Devils, Travis Zajac collected three assists and Parise also recorded two helpers.
Clemmensen made 25 saves and picked up his first win since January 1, 2008. Both Kevin Weekes and Clemmensen have taken over New Jersey's goaltending duties since franchise netminder Martin Brodeur went down with a torn biceps earlier this month. Brodeur isn't expected to be back until at least February.
The Devils, who are 5-4-1 as the host this season, are playing the middle test of a three-game homestand tonight. Jersey will complete the residency Friday night against the New York Islanders.
Florida has won three of its last four games and two of those victories came against the rival Tampa Bay Lightning. After dropping a 3-2 home test to Detroit on Friday, the Panthers rebounded with Tuesday's close victory in Tampa.
Nathan Horton was credited with the game-winning tally in the shootout as the Panthers edged the Bolts, 4-3, at St. Pete Times Forum.
Bryan McCabe scored twice and David Booth also tallied in regulation for the Panthers.
Tomas Vokoun allowed just three goals on a whopping 52 shots in the win. Vokoun's busy night included 15 saves in the first period and 20 more in the second.
The Panthers are just 3-6-1 as the visiting team this year, but have won two straight on the road. Florida is in the midst of a three-game road trip, which will end Friday in Boston.
Florida has won two of its last three tests against the Devils, but Jersey has still taken three of five and 11 of 15 encounters. The Panthers have also lost seven of their previous nine tests in the Garden State.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
