The National Thoroughbred Racing Association announced that Goins won the honor for his photograph of jockey Julien Leparoux being thrown over his mount, Sanibel Storm, during the sixth race at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington on April 29. Both horse and rider were unhurt.
"I'm a very lucky guy," said Goins. "This is one of the greatest thrills of my life. Before I blew out the candles on my birthday cake I wished I would win the Eclipse Award."
Goins celebrated his 36th birthday last week.
"I was about 20 feet from the spot when Julien went head over heels," Goins noted. "I was really glad that both he and the filly were all right."
Goins was recovering from an appendectomy two weeks earlier when he took the assignment.
"I should have been home resting," Goins said, "But I took the assignment to cover the final day of the racing on the old main track before construction of the Polytrack surface."
The three member panel voted unanimously to honor Goins.
The 2006 Eclipse Awards ceremony will be held on Monday, January 22, 2007 at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA.
