Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins exercised the 2009 option on catcher Mike Redmond on Thursday. The 37-year-old backstop hit .287 with 12 RBI in 38 games for the Twins this season, his fourth as Joe Mauer's backup. In 11 seasons in the majors -- seven with the Florida Marlins, four with the Twins -- Redmond is a .292 hitter with 13 homers and 231 RBI. The veteran catcher has not committed an error in his four seasons in Minnesota.

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins released pitcher Sergio Mitre on Monday. The right-hander, who underwent Tommy John surgery on July 15 and missed the entire 2008 season, is not expected to return until the middle of next season at the earliest. Mitre is 10-23 lifetime with a 5.36 earned run average in 78 games, including 52 starts, for the Cubs and Marlins. In 2007 with Florida, he went 5-8 with a 4.65 ERA in 27 starts.
